  6. This  little   modification  should  be  
  7. at  some  use  for  nearly  all   Amiga
  8. owners, because  it can avoid  viruses, 
  9. do copying easier  etc.   etc.  If  you 
  10. only  want   to  have   a  switch  that  
  11. writeprotects  all  drives  at the same 
  12. time, it can be done  much   more  easy 
  13. than if you also wants  a  writeenabled
  14. switch. So, lets take the easy first...  
  15. First you have to locate  the right CIA
  16. chip  with  the  numbers  (U7 &  8520).  
  17. When this is done find leg 5 and solder 
  18. a small  wire  to  it.  The wire should  
  19. now be soldered to  the middle pin on a 
  20. on-on switch and the  other  pin on the  
  21. switch  should  be soldered  to  ground 
  22. (pin 1 on same chip).   Thats  it.  The 
  23. first  position  on  the  switch is ALL 
  24. drives writeprotected (even if the disk 
  25. is unwriteprotected).   And   the other 
  26. position is normal ('disk-controlled').  
  27. And now,  lets  go on with the more ad-
  28. vanced type.  As written  before,  find 
  29. leg 5 on the right CIA-chip.  Pick  out 
  30. the chip and  bend  the  leg (#5).  Now 
  31. solder a  wire  from  the  leg  to  the  
  32. upper  pin  on  a  on-off-on.  The midd
  33. le pin  should  be  connected   to  the  
  34. fifth 'hole' in  the  socket.  Put  the 
  35. chip back in the socket and  solder the 
  36. last  pin  on  the  switch  to  leg one 
  37. (ground) on the chip.  Again, thats it.  
  38. You  now  have   writeenable   on   the 
  39. middle position  of  the  switch. Write
  40. protected  in  the  other  position and 
  41. 'disk-controlled' in the last position.
  42. The  simple way  this  switch works, is 
  43. to make use  of the WPROT-signal.  When 
  44. low (connected   to  ground) ALL floppy
  45. drives are writeprotected and when con-
  46. nected to nothing (high) ALL drives are 
  47. unwriteprotected.  If you have any pro-
  48. blems in  the  unwriteprotected   posi-
  49. tion,  it's  maybe  a good idea to sol-
  50. der a 1 Kohm resister from  pin  20  on 
  51. the CIA (+5v) to pin 5 on the same CIA.  
  52. This is because I'm not  100%  sure  if  
  53. the CIA-chips  are  tri-state  or  not.
